Do-It-Yourself Project: Install a Dimmer Switch

Dimmer switchDimmer switches are great for "mood lighting" - and they can help you save energy and extend bulb life.

  • Time: 15 minutes
  • Cost: $5-$15, depending on the style of dimmer switch you choose
  • Difficulty: Easy (if you have previous wiring experience and the light is not on a three-way switch)
  • Tools: Circuit test, screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, wire nuts

Installing a dimmer switchStep 1

Turn off the power to the circuit at the service panel. Flag the fuse or breaker switch with a piece of tape to make sure no one turns the power back on while you're still working.

Step 2

Remove the faceplate and carefully remove the small screws that hold the existing switch in place. Gently pull the switch from the box and use your circuit tester on the existing switch to make sure the power is off.

Step 3

When you're certain the power is off, disconnect all the wires and remove the old switch. Straighten the ends of the wires with your needle-nose pliers.

Step 4

Take your new dimmer switch and connect the two black wires to the wires in the electrical box according to the manufacturers' directions.

Step 5

Use your pliers to gently twist the ends of the wires together, and then secure them together with a wire nut. Carefully push all the wires back into the electrical box.

Step 6

Screw the new dimmer switch to the electrical box, and then replace the cover plate. Turn the power back on at the service panel and test the dimmer.
