Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are becoming increasingly available as a lighting source. They have a long life span, are durable, energy efficient and cool to the touch. As research into new applications continues, LEDs are gaining in popularity. New designs combine multiple LEDs to produce a brighter output. You may be surprised to know that many traffic lights now use LED bulbs.
Although the initial cost of LED bulbs is currently higher than incandescent or compact fluorescent bulbs, prices are coming down and new applications are being developed. Currently, one of the applications making the greatest use of LED technology is holiday lighting.
There are many advantages. LED holiday lights have a life span of up to 100,000 hours. Up to 25 strings can be connected end-to-end without overloading the typical household circuit. The sturdy epoxy lenses are nearly indestructible and their cool-burning personality makes combustion nearly impossible no matter how long they are left on.
Consumers who may have been disappointed with the first LED holiday lights on the market will be pleased to find they are now available in a wide variety of styles including ball-shaped, candle-shaped, icicle and mini-icicle. Screw-in LEDs are even available to convert standard incandescent strings.
